Connecting Rods
A
custom machine shop was trying to machine a 4130 (2”
thick) chrome moly steel to produce a high performance connection
rod, used in super-charged tractor engines. What JIT did was
cut down on tooling costs. They were trying to tool with vertical
CNC machining. Using that method, the client was dulling cutters
at about $80/connecting rod, and it was taking 10 hours to
machine one of these. By waterjet cutting,
we saved him six hours per connecting rod. By waterjet cutting
outside profiles, only .030 of material was left to bring
to final dimension by machining.
